With only a week left to go until the Hannibal season 2 premiere, NBC has released a clip from the first episode.
Over a dinner of what most certainly isn’t pork, Hannibal Lecter and Jack Crawford discuss the position Will’s recent breakdown has put them in. The nature of their conversation implies the violence that the previous trailers have shown, and, as the link points out, they’re unlikely to be linked (pending a random wardrobe change mid-scene).
“This is a loss,” asserts Hannibal gravely, “Will is a loss, and we are mourning a death.” Jack appears to take the responsibility of Wills death, but Hannibal is quick to add himself to the list of the guilty. Jack is more upset at his own involvement than Hannibal (reasonably so), as he goes on to say that the walls of the FBI will put them on trial for their part in Will’s trauma.
Jack goes on to remind Hannibal of Will’s assertion that Lecter is the one truly to blame. Hannibal smoothly complies to the inevitable investigation, doing what is good for everyone.
“We can’t define Will only by his murderer status,” says Hannibal in the last few moments. Jacks response is all too telling:
“We can’t define Will at all.”
